Some changes to the set-up of Netscape 4.7 or later is needed before it can be used with BellSouth Accelerator technology.

Obtaining BellSouth Accelerator technology's port number

First, you need to determine the proxy port number that BellSouth Accelerator technology is using. By default this number is 8080, however BellSouth Accelerator technology will assign another number if a port number conflict is detected during the installation process.

Follow these steps to check the BellSouth Accelerator technology proxy port number:

  1. If you have not already done so, download and install BellSouth Accelerator technology.
  2. Click the small blue BellSouth Accelerator technology rocket icon (located in the taskbar by the system clock).
  3. Click Options...
  4. Click Advanced...
  5. Note the port number. You will need this number to configure Netscape to work with BellSouth Accelerator technology.
  6. Click OK.

Setting Netscape's HTTP Proxy Address and Port Number
 
Follow these steps to set the Netscape HTTP proxy address and port number:
  1. Click on the Netscape Edit menu.
  2. Select Preferences...
  3. Double click on the Advanced category.
  4. Click on Proxies.
  5. Click View
  6. Make sure that the "Manual proxy configuration" radio button is selected.

    Important: If your system is already using an HTTP proxy, write down the proxy name and its corresponding port number and save the information. You will need it if you ever stop using BellSouth Accelerator technology.

  7. Click in the HTTP Proxy area and enter the word localhost.
  8. Click in the HTTP Port area and enter the BellSouth Accelerator technology port number (by default 8080, but you should verify this as described above).
  9. Click OK. Try accessing your favorite Web sites.

Your Internet experience should now be accelerated.

Important: If you stop using or uninstall BellSouth Accelerator technology, you will need to reset the Netscape proxy settings to their original values, if any.
